The History of 'A Piping Weekend'
Since 2000, the Phoenix Pipe Band has sponsored A Piping Weekend the first weekend of December with the goal of promoting excellence in and appreciation of bagpipe music. On the Saturday in each year the Weekend has been held, the band brought in top bagpipe performers and teachers, to teach Piobaireachd, the classical music of the bagpipe. And then on Sunday, a solo piping contest has been held for players from around the Southwest.
This year Gold Medalist Bruce Gandy, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, will return in the role of piping instructor.
Once again this year, the solo Piping contests will be held on Sunday, with soloists competing in 6 different events. These events are graded by performance ability and music requirements that get more difficult as people move up from Grade IV to Grade I.
A Drumming Workshop has been added to this year’s Piping Weekend, enhancing to the enjoyment and service provided by this unique event.
Sunday’s competition, Silent Auction, specialty foods and music are open to the public, providing an opportunity for both pipers and pipe lovers to enjoy the skirl of pipes and some Celtic fun in support of better piping for all to enjoy.
This year the event is sponsored by Four Peaks Brewery!
